Modernise Your Period Home

Looking to create a modern twist within your period home?

Victorian terrace style houses are the most common and most popular type of property we successfully sell within the Golden Triangle area of Norwich. This type of property is unique, retaining character and period features providing plenty of design potential. One of the most popular design trends involves utilising  character features and adding a modern twist. Here are a few ideas on how you can achieve this…

Creating Contrasts  – The most loved features during the Victorian era were the traditional ornate cornicing and ceiling roses. A simple way to modernise your period home is by utilising and celebrating these period features, whilst  creating contrasts between two different time periods. You may decide to re-think your ceiling colour to contrast and enhance the ornate cornicing, whilst enabling an expression of individuality through choice of colour. You can utilise a classic ceiling rose to give a room a modern touch by contrasting it with a simple ceiling light.  A simple ceiling light allows the detail of the ceiling rose to still be a focus point of the room and avoids history being lost beneath  a  modern day feature.

Statement Colours – The colour schemes of the Victorian era were dark and gloomy, an idea to keep in touch with the time period is through the use of dark colours and hues on the walls then including a modern twist by adding a touch of colour in home furnishings. For example you could add colour through simple furnishings like candles and cushions, or you could consider adding a pop of colour to your floor using a bold rug – why not consider a geometric design to give a further modern feel.

Making An Entrance –  You may wish to modernise your home externally to make it stand out in comparison to similar properties on your street. One way to achieve this is through creating a classic Victorian pathway which leads to an updated  and bespoke entrance  door, keeping in touch with both the property’s origin and the modern day world.   One way in which you could update your entrance door is through selecting a modern door and applying traditional features such as stained glass windows, door knobs and a door knocker.
